What are some ideas for organizing our utility closet?

An organized utility closet is as important as every other closet in your home. Utility closets are usually relatively small, therefore it is extremely important that this space be used efficiently. Always keep cleaning items easily accessible to all areas of your home. Having a utility closet on each floor of your home is a great idea.

Decide exactly what you need to store in this area and then proceed. If a whole closet cannot be used for cleaning supplies, designate one special area in your home for this purpose. Allow shelf space for waxes, soaps, and cleaning detergents. Shelves 12” to 16” are perfect because things in the back of the shelf will always be easy to see and reach. Hazardous cleaning supplies should always be kept out of reach of children.

Hooks or special clamps should be put onto one wall of the closet to store a dustpan and brush, mops, and brooms. Alternating handles upward and downward on the wall will allow for more storage of this type of item. Try to remember all the special cleaning items you use when designating this area.

Vacuum cleaner storage is also important and should be contained in your cleaning closet. If you have a central vacuum system, allow adequate storage for the vacuum hose.

Storing cleaning cloths can be done in wire basket systems, along with frequently used cleaning items. Roll this system throughout the house while you go about your cleaning day. Air circulation is very important when storing oily cleaning cloths, this will prevent spontaneous combustion.

We hope these utility closet hints will make the chore of cleaning your home a pleasure.
