Athletic equipment should be stored in an area organized specifically for those items. Sports equipment, if used frequently should be stored near an exit of your home. A mud closet, basement, or garage would be an ideal area. Any available space in your home can be designed to best suit your needs.
After deciding where the best place is to house your equipment, start organizing. Tennis rackets and racquetball rackets can be hung from hooks placed at varied heights on a wall. Not only is it a space efficient idea, but it looks great. Bicycles can be hung from hooks on the wall or hung from the ceiling joists in your garage. Basketballs, volleyballs, and baseballs can be stored in an equipment bag to be taken with you when it is time for recreation. Basket systems can be used to store these items neatly. A specially designed shelf slanting upward from the wall works great and prevents balls from rolling all over the place.
Small sports accessories can be stored in a basket system, which will allow you to easily keep things separated. You can roll this entire system out to your playing area and return it when you are finished. Skis can be stored using special racks designed to store skis vertically on the wall. Special units can be designed to hold your skies, boots, and poles all in an area of their own.
If you are really into sports and have available closet space, a great idea is to organize a special area just for athletic equipment. If you enjoy participating in sports, finding your equipment should be quick and easy.
