I am a hat collector, can you give me some ideas on storing my collection?

Hats are a very popular and unique item to collect, therefore it is important to display them in a correct manner. If you wear hats frequently, it is important that you always have easy access to them.

Hats can be stored on a shallow shelf mounted onto your wall. A shelf 8” deep would be ideal. Shelves should be high enough on the wall so that you can easily walk by the area. As with any collection or hobby that is important to you, you should display it in an organized fashion. Hats do not have to be thrown in a closet.

Hats can be hung on hooks scattered over a wall, but then only the top of the hat will be visible. Baseball hats and visors can be hung by a string attached to a hook from the ceiling. You can store about twenty hats in only two feet of space. All hats are easily visible and this looks great. To remove a hat, unsnap the back clips and replace it the same way when you are done with it. Another idea is to design specially enclosed storage areas for your collection. A solid adjustable shelf unit can be designed to store your hat collection in a neat manner.

Hats that are often worn should have their own space in your foyer or mud closet. Hooks or shelves can be placed into your closet for this purpose. Be creative in designing new storage spaces for your hats or hobbies.

Enjoy this new phase of the organization. Storing your hat collection in a neat, organized manner is as important as an organized closet. Good luck..we take our hats off to you!

What are some ideas for organizing our utility closet?

An organized utility closet is as important as every other closet in your home. Utility closets are usually relatively small, therefore it is extremely important that this space be used efficiently. Always keep cleaning items easily accessible to all areas of your home. Having a utility closet on each floor of your home is a great idea.

Decide exactly what you need to store in this area and then proceed. If a whole closet cannot be used for cleaning supplies, designate one special area in your home for this purpose. Allow shelf space for waxes, soaps, and cleaning detergents. Shelves 12” to 16” are perfect because things in the back of the shelf will always be easy to see and reach. Hazardous cleaning supplies should always be kept out of reach of children.

Hooks or special clamps should be put onto one wall of the closet to store a dustpan and brush, mops, and brooms. Alternating handles upward and downward on the wall will allow for more storage of this type of item. Try to remember all the special cleaning items you use when designating this area.

Vacuum cleaner storage is also important and should be contained in your cleaning closet. If you have a central vacuum system, allow adequate storage for the vacuum hose.

Storing cleaning cloths can be done in wire basket systems, along with frequently used cleaning items. Roll this system throughout the house while you go about your cleaning day. Air circulation is very important when storing oily cleaning cloths, this will prevent spontaneous combustion.

We hope these utility closet hints will make the chore of cleaning your home a pleasure.

What are some tips for organizing all of my sports equipment?

Athletic equipment should be stored in an area organized specifically for those items. Sports equipment, if used frequently should be stored near an exit of your home. A mud closet, basement, or garage would be an ideal area. Any available space in your home can be designed to best suit your needs.

After deciding where the best place is to house your equipment, start organizing. Tennis rackets and racquetball rackets can be hung from hooks placed at varied heights on a wall. Not only is it a space efficient idea, but it looks great. Bicycles can be hung from hooks on the wall or hung from the ceiling joists in your garage. Basketballs, volleyballs, and baseballs can be stored in an equipment bag to be taken with you when it is time for recreation. Basket systems can be used to store these items neatly. A specially designed shelf slanting upward from the wall works great and prevents balls from rolling all over the place.

Small sports accessories can be stored in a basket system, which will allow you to easily keep things separated. You can roll this entire system out to your playing area and return it when you are finished. Skis can be stored using special racks designed to store skis vertically on the wall. Special units can be designed to hold your skies, boots, and poles all in an area of their own.

If you are really into sports and have available closet space, a great idea is to organize a special area just for athletic equipment. If you enjoy participating in sports, finding your equipment should be quick and easy.

I’m building a new home and want to make sure I have adequate storage areas. Any hints?

When building a home, the number of closets seems to be a priority, but not the organization of some of those closets. We feel that adequate organized storage space must be of top priority and should be thoroughly thought out while still in the blueprint stage. Start by taking an inventory of the contents of your present closets. Identify items used every day for which you need very quick and easy access. Then, determine which items may be used only once or twice a year.

Storage space ranges from closets and cabinets to basements and garages. Always be sure to have a closet for outdoor wear near the main entrance of your home. If your family enters your home from the garage, be sure to have a closet in that area for those coats. This will prevent extra trips through the house. Allow proper storage for hobbies. If you love to read or have 100 trophies, make sure a special space is created for those items. Storage space near the dining room for table linens, silverware, and china is a great idea. Linen closet shelf space should be no less than 16” deep to allow for the correct storage of towels, linens, and blankets. Do not forget about the storage of extra pillows, comforters, and sleeping bags.

Consider utilizing space in attics and basements for those items not frequently used. Remember to allow space for holiday decorations and your outdoor lawn equipment. An organized garage or storage shed would be perfect. Be sure to have large enough closets in all bedrooms and to use every bit of space efficiently. A reach-in closet should be no less than 24” deep so your clothes can hang comfortably. Reach-in closets should be as wide as possible and have a door opening as wide as the closet. With bi-hinged doors, you always have full access to your closet. With sliding doors, half of the closet is always hidden. Walk-in closets should be at least six feet wide to allow for hanging on each side of the closet and an adequate walking aisle. Lights are absolutely crucial in every closet.

The blueprint stage is the time to prevent mistakes in the actual construction of closets. Consider consulting your local closet design firm to help you troubleshoot your blueprints for those errors. They will suggest alternatives and help you create organized storage spaces for your new home.
