I have a large walk-in closet, how can I use the center space more efficiently?

Walk-in closets can be the “ideal closet”. A walk-in closet should be no less than six feet wide. You must allow 24 inches on each side for hanging clothes, which will leave you 2 feet of walking space through the center of the closet.

Walk-in closets wider than 10 feet can be made very space efficient. You can hang clothes around the perimeter of the closet and still have space for a freestanding island up the center of the closet. Clothes can be hung up in the center of the closet or shelves can be designed for extra storage, allowing access from both sides.

A separate freestanding unit can also be designed with drawers or shelves at a height of only 36 inches so it can act as a dresser top for you. This can also be a great place to set up a suitcase when it is time to pack.

When designing your large walk-in closet, always be sure to allow adequate space so you do not feel crowded. Another idea is a closet carousel placed in the center of the closet. This electronic unit can be hooked up so the push of a button will automatically bring your clothes to you.

A separate freestanding island can be designed with drawers or shelves at a height of only 36” so it can act as a dresser top for you. This can also be a great place to set up a suitcase when it is time to pack.

A walk-in closet as with any closet is only “ideal” if it is made space efficient for your needs. Consult your local closet design firm for expert design advice on organizing your closets.
